Vegetable Printing Art
Let’s Get Started
Cover your table with newspaper. Trust me, things might get a bit messy, but that’s part of the fun!
Adults: cut the vegetables so they have a flat side. Potatoes work great for shapes like stars or hearts, or just cut them in half.
Pour out the Star Tempera Paint into trays. Keep one colour per tray, or get creative and mix up new colours.
Dip the flat side of your veggie into the paint. Make sure there’s enough paint on there, but not too much that it drips.
Press the veggie onto your paper to make your print. Lift it up to see your masterpiece!
Try other vegetables to see what patterns they make. Corn on the cob rolls out a lovely stripe, and celery prints look like trees.
Let the paint dry. If you fancy, you can add arms, legs, or faces with felt pens once it’s dry.
If you’ve got them, stick on googly eyes for a good giggle — kids really love this part!

That’s It!
This Bright Ideas lesson is such a winner because it’s simple, colourful, and uses things you already have. Children will love exploring all the textures and patterns vegetables can make. It’s a great way to mix art with a bit of science and a whole lot of fun!
