Today, we’re going to make a bold, textured koru painting that pops off the canvas. Download the free PDF lesson plan or follow the instructions below. This is a simple project that looks amazing, and kids will love the gold and green colours shining against the black background.

You Will Need
Lets get started:
Paint the background Roll two coats of black paint over the front and sides of the canvas. Let it dry.

Prepare your koru design Draw or trace your koru onto the back of the Duraseal.
Cut it out Carefully cut out the areas you’ll be painting – the koru and the leaves.

Mix your textured paints In one pot, mix 1 tablespoon of Modelling Compound with 3 tablespoons of Metallic Gold. In another pot, do the same with Vivid Leaf Green.
Stick down the Duraseal Peel off the backing and press it flat onto the dry black canvas. Seal the edges well.

Paint the koru Use your brush to dab the gold mix into the koru area for a bumpy, textured effect.
Paint the leaves Use a painting knife to smooth the green mix into the leaf shapes for a raised, glossy look.
Peel and reveal After about 20–30 minutes, when the paint feels slightly set, peel away the Duraseal to reveal the clean edges.
Final touches |Touch up any black areas if needed. When dry, sign your masterpiece like a pro.
This project is perfect for classrooms or at home. It’s quick, colourful, and the texture makes it exciting for kids to explore. The koru shape is a beautiful New Zealand symbol, and the gold-and-green combo really makes it stand out.
